Brief Introduction to SIE

School of International Exchange (SIE) of Shandong Normal University (SDNU) is a teaching-and-administrative-oriented unit which mainly aims at recruiting and training international students. As early as in 1983, SDNU had begun accepting international students as one of the first group of universities that initiated the education for international students. In 1987, SDNU established a Mandarin-teaching unit for international students, which led to the foundation of SIE in 1995. For 20 plus years SIE has trained over 5,000 short-term and long-term international students from more than 40 countries.

SIE has a team of excellent teachers with reasonable talent echelon. They are dedicated to the teaching career and offer quality teaching with abundant scientific attainments. At present, there are 19 full-time teachers giving Chinese language courses to the international students, among whom there are 4 professors, 7 associate professors and 6 lecturers. 3 of the teachers have obtained the doctoral degrees while 7 have got the master degrees. Most of the full-time teachers have been teaching Chinese as a foreign language for many years and have the experience of teaching Chinese abroad. Dozens of countries have witnessed their teaching experiences, such as Korea, Japan, USA, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Sudan, UK, Egypt and Burma. All the experiences have enabled them to accumulate rich experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. There are also over 20 part-time teachers teaching in SIE. 4 of them are Supervisors of Ph. D candidates while 14 are those of master degree candidates. Both the full-time and part-time teachers are equipped with high academic level and strong scientific research strength. While offering courses on Chinese and Chinese culture, the teachers can also give lectures on Chinese culture for the international students, such as Chinese martial arts, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese paper-cutting art, table tennis, etc.

SIE presently offers two undergraduate programs, namely, degree program and non-degree program. Degree program mainly aims to admit and foster undergraduates majoring in Chinese, including high school graduate or above (program duration: 4 years) and students with a junior college diploma (program duration: 2 years). Non-degree program mainly refers to the courses on Chinese and Chinese culture offered to short-term and long-term students and the exam-oriented training offered to HSK candidates.

Apart from the above programs, SIE also offers short-term and long-term trainings on Chinese to overseas Chinese and students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
